Uccelliera - Brunello di Montalcino

A winery dating back to the Middle Ages, meaning "bird cage" or "aviary" in Italian, which most likely links back to when falcons were bred in the area.
Todays owner, Andrea Cortonesi, who has a background in farming, bought the 6 hectare plot in 1986 and is now recognised as one of the top producers of Brunello di Montalcino. He works organically (although not certified), believing that the vineyards are capable of expressing themselves without to much intervention.

His estate comprises of various plots of different exposures and soils, centred around Castelnuovo del Abate on the south-east side of Montalcino.

Andrea ferments his wines in stainless steel, then they are aged in a mix of large oak casks and small barriques, then several months in the bottle.

And the outcome? Beautiful wines filled with personality, which in the last 5-6 years have slowly risen through the ranks and are now recognised as one of the regions very best wines.

Brunello di Montalcino - Riserva D.O.C.G.
- Only produced in the best years, producing wines of outstanding quality, from grapes selected from the oldest vineyards. - The wines are aged for a minimum of 24 months, up to 36 for special vintages, again in Slavonian and French barrels, then sees 6 months bottle ageing prior to release.

Rossi di Montalcino - D.O.C.
- The third wine they produce is a Rosso di Montalcino, from the estates youngest Brunello vineyards or those situated in the cooler areas. The wines produced are in a classic Rosso style; medium bodied with a crisp finish, well balanced with a velvety mouthfeel. Again maturation is in Slavonian and French oak barrels for a minimum of 8 months.

Rapace - Toscana I.G.T.
- The last wine they produce is part of an ongoing experiment within the vineyard and the cellar, with a very distinctive outcome. The grapes are carefully selected from the dedicated Brunello vineyards, and are joined by 10% of cabernet sauvignon. Small oak barrels are used for the ageing, which is a minimum of 18 months, then a further 6 months in the bottle prior to release. It's a rich and powerful wine, full of complexity. It's clean, smooth with fine well integrated tannins.
